Meet Our New Staff Member

6/7/2016

Dear Friends of ACA Illinois,

As many of you are transitioning into staff training or camper sessions, we are transitioning here within the office as well. Gordie's last day as a staff member is June 24th and he is eagerly awaiting joining you as a member and volunteer. With several camp visits already lined up, Gordie will still be out and about changing lives this very summer.

I am so pleased to announce our new staff member, Kim Steiner has joined our team. You can learn more about Kim by reading below. I look forward to seeing the great things Kim will be do here in ACA Illinois with her varied background and skill sets.

Carlise, Kim and I are so thrilled to be working with you and wish you the very best and safest summer possible!

Best,
Colette Marquardt
Executive Director

Hello Everyone!

My name is Kimberly Steiner and I am thrilled be joining the American Camp Association, Illinois as the Program Specialist! Camp has been one of the most formational experiences in my growth in life and and in my career and I am so excited to be apart of this amazing organization!

A little bit about me, I attended Western Illinois University and in between playing Ultimate Frisbee I received my B.A in Communication. Throughout high school and college I continued to spend my summers working first as a Counselor, then Cook and finally Waterfront Director at a camp in the Upper Peninsula (UP). The desire to turn my love of camp into a career was in the 2 years I spent full-time in the UP as the Program Director for that camp. I left the UP in 2014 and have since been working as a Program Manager for a youth development organization, running leadership programs for kids grades K-12.

I love that camp is a place where everyone is welcome and that time and technology are not as important as community. Camp has taught me resourcefulness, flexibility and that anything can be turned into a song or chant!

I am really humbled to have the opportunity to work for ACA Illinois; I can't wait to meet you all and talk camp!

Meet Colette

Tagging along with her older sisters' Girl Scout troops, Colette developed a deep passion for camp at an early age. She attended camp growing up and joined the staff as a teenager. With an emphasis on tripping and community building programs, Colette went on to work at and direct resident and day camps throughout the Mid-West.

Colette served on the Board of Directors for ACA Illinois as Education Chair, Standards Visitor and Instructor and President-Elect. Many know Colette through her involvement in the Mid States Camp Conference. After serving as a speaker and volunteer, Colette was selected to serve as the Conference Chair and has continued to lead the Mid States community with a group of committed volunteers.

Colette moved from serving on the board to the staff role as Director of Operations, working with Gordie on the DFI Title XX program, Accreditation Program and serving the members of ACA Illinois. Colette, along with the other ACA Illinois staff successfully sent over 4,500+ youth and adults to camp last summer.

After studying Women's Studies in college and through her hands on education in camp over the years, Colette learned that the power of camp goes beyond the campers and staff. Colette believes that the camp community and experience strengthens communities, the State of Illinois and the world around all of us. This is why she is so passionate about the DFI Title XX program and helping to get more youth and adults into camping and educating the public on the benefits of the camp experience.

As a graduate of the National Outdoor Leadership School and Wilderness Medicine Institute, Colette loves paddling the lakes of the Adirondack Mountains by canoe, singing around the campfire and spending time with family and friends. Colette lives in Chicago with her partner, Shena, and their large collection of books.

Colette begins as the Executive Director of ACA Illinois on February 1, 2016.
