the camp is essential to Illinois campaign
2020 has been a tough and challenging time for many people and agencies, and the camp industry is no stranger to these struggles. Camps are essential to a thriving Illinois,
and it’s critical that we understand the positive impact and necessity of them. Camp is often misunderstood by the notion that “it’s not a real job” because people highlight the field and our work as a purpose for fun and play. However, camps operate from a service learning, or community engagement, perspective, meaning that they utilize fun and play as experiential-based tools of education to:
(1) Promote and provide access to the outdoors and environmental education;
(2) Provide childcare services for working families during out of school time, including summer/winter/spring breaks and other holidays; and
(3) Provide vital services such as food, housing, healthcare, and more for many young people.
